Born in Hollywood in 1930, Carol grew up in a place and time punctuated with artists of many media. She received her formal training in painting at UC Berkeley following Hans Hofmann’s tenure there, and was enormously inspired by his work. As an abstract expressionist, his influence on her work was substantial. She also studied at UCLA, the Sorbonne in France, and at La Esmeralda Art Academy in Mexico City shortly after Frida Kahlo’s tenure there.
